You are accountable to God

Romans 3:19-20

19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.
20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. – Romans 3:19-20

Oh that every mouth would be stopped. So many of the problems we see in the world today started with statements, ideas, propaganda, lies. The arena of world politics is particularly filled with statements, speeches and information and no one knows who to trust. The speed at which politicians have to respond in this age, due to social media platforms like Twitter and the media that reports news instantly, means that there is no time to make considered responses. Mind you to some degree this has always been the case. Take the example of the siege of Jerusalem by Assyria recorded in Isaiah 36. The Rabshakeh initially tried to defeat the Jews by using rhetoric:

4 And the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this trust of yours?
5 Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? In whom do you now trust, that you have rebelled against me? – Isaiah 36:4-5

Words were used to try and intimidate, confuse and spread fear. And the same continues today. But God makes it clear that He will judge the nations. The whole world will be held accountable before God.

We all will have to give account of our lives before God. The word of God was given in the form of the law so that we would realise that we fall short, we do not hit the target, we sin and therefore need a redeemer to pay for our sins. The law was given so that we would understand how sinful and wicked we are. So that we would realise our need for forgiveness and salvation. We can not trust in keeping the law to earn our way to heaven. This is one of the most effective lies of the enemy to keep people from trusting in God. “Trust in yourself” “Be the person you want to be” “Realise your potential” “All you need is within you”. This is the enemy’s tactic to keep people proud and self-reliant instead of having a broken spirit and falling before a loving God in humility and seeking forgiveness. If you truly look into the mirror of the word of God you would see not only how worthless you are without God but how glorious you are when you submit your life to God and allow his Holy Spirit in to your heart. We are all accountable to God for our words and actions and we will have to stand before Him one day and give account. He will not want to know if we managed to keep His law, He knows we have failed. He will want to know what we did with the gift of life, the offer of mercy and forgiveness He gave us in Jesus Christ His Son (Acts 26:18).
